The Best of the Big Bands
Sixteen songs recorded by Doris Day as featured vocalist with Les Brown and his band between November 1940 and September 1946 -- although Day's two biggest hits, "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time," are to be found not here, but on the Les Brown Best of the Big Bands reissue. The sound is excellent, and the music is hot, sassy, and downright sensual, as embodied in Day's sweet, sultry voice and the superb Brown band's playing. If you want to hear Day in top form, swinging with the best of them and brushing up real close against jazz -- from ages 16 to 22 -- this, not "Secret Love" or "Que Sera Sera," is the place to start, like with the sassy, bouncy "Tain't Me." The notes by Will Friedwald are practically a love letter to Day; the music is her love letter to us.
