Le Bon Temp Roule
JOHN SWENSON WROTE THIS REVIEW OF JOE'S SECOND MUSICAL RELEASE IN OFFBEAT MAGAZINE-NEW ORLEANS, LA.

more than a few of the songs on "LE BON TEMP ROULE" sound like they could fit easily on Jimmy Buffett's next release. From the hard-luck snowbird whose team just lost the Super Bowl in "I Need a Beach" to the "Creature From the Black Saloon" Bennett has a knack for articulating the tribulations of various down-and-outers, a group he obviously relates to as the autobiographical "It Seemed Like A Good Idea at the Time" and "I'm Still Here" prove. Bennett's sense of humor and amiability power the whimsical "Where'd I Park My Karma" and "Club Med Mutiny", but he balaces the cynicism with convincing senimentality on his strongest compositions-the story telling "Tattos, Souvenirs and Scars", the delicate waltz "I'll Save A Sunset For You" and the audaciously Buffettesque "We All Are Sailors". Of course, Bennett's trump card is convincing listener's that it's time to order that next Perfect Margarita and the title track, a splashy R & B vamp powered by guitar, organ, and a funk horn arrangement, definitely does the trick.
